Pando is a continuous evidence system that makes skills developed through real learning experiences visible, measurable, comparable, and transferable — so students progress through demonstrated growth, not time alone.

The idea

The new old idea of skills.

Skills aren’t new — people have always learned by doing, practicing, and becoming capable. What’s new is making skills the organizing architectureof education, rather than a side effect locked inside courses. The traditional system organizes learning around courses, grade levels, instructional time, and periodic tests — structures so durable that historians David Tyack and Larry Cuban called them the “grammar of schooling.” Those structures date to an early-twentieth-century push for administrative efficiency, and they measure time served far better than they measure what a learner can actually do.

A skill is

a developing, repeatable capacity to apply knowledge, processes, judgment, and tools to accomplish an authentic task or solve a real problem.

A deliverable is

a documented piece of authentic evidence — a prototype, a presentation, a paper, a performance — showing a learner applying skills at a moment in their development. The deliverable isn’t the skill; it’s the evidence.

Standardized assessments aren’t the enemy — they’re simply incomplete. They capture a narrow subset of the knowledge, skills, and authentic performances associated with success beyond school. Research on performance assessment and deeper learning points the same direction Pando builds toward: evidence gathered from real work, over time, tells a far richer story than any single test.

Why it matters

A grade is a number. A learning profile is a story.

Take something as concrete as soldering. Underneath one observable skill sits chemistry (why lead alloys melt the way they do), technique, safety, troubleshooting, and communication — and a progression that can run from joining two wires all the way to programming automated manufacturing equipment. A course grade compresses all of that into a single number. Pando keeps the resolution.

Each deliverable is scored 1–4 on the specific skills it demonstrates. Classroom grades auto-suggest a starting point, and AI can draft suggestions grounded in the student's actual submitted work — the teacher always reviews and decides.

3 · Align to the standards that count

Every skill links to real standards — state academic standards (including the full NY Next Generation frameworks), CTE program standards, CDOS, and your district's Portrait of a Graduate — so authentic work satisfies official requirements.

4 · Show the growth to everyone

Evidence builds into each student's Learning Journey: a progression graph per skill, end-of-cycle narratives with a personal paragraph for every student, and printable snapshots. Students and families see the same transparent record educators see.

Jade built a water-quality sensor to monitor salt levels in a local estuary. Along the way she practiced design thinking, soldering, research, biology, and technical writing. Why we’re named Pando

One forest. One root system. Endless growth.

In Utah’s Fishlake Basin grows Pando — some 47,000 quaking aspens that are not a forest of separate trees at all, but one living organism. Every trunk rises from a single shared root system spread across 106 acres and weighing roughly 13 million pounds: the heaviest known living thing on Earth, three times the weight of the largest giant sequoia. It has been growing continuously for at least 9,000 years — and quite possibly far longer. Its name is Latin for “I spread.”

Every trunk draws on the same system — as the Natural History Museum of Utah puts it, they “collect energy, manage defenses, and change leaves at the same time.”

About Moon Tree Analytics

Pando is built by Moon Tree Analytics. Our name comes from a true story: in 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa carried about 500 tree seeds around the Moon. Planted back on Earth, they grew into thriving “Moon Trees” in schoolyards and town squares across the country (NASA: The Moon Trees). That’s our idea in a name — projects can shoot for the moon, and planted well, they grow into something lasting: rooted in our communities, supporting us in return.

Our mission is to provide districts, municipalities, and states with individualized optimization interfaces built for peer-to-peer work. We plant the seeds that allow people to grow and develop — empowering decision-making through support — and hold continuous, individualized development that meets the needs of the user as the key to our success.
